Peripartum cardiomyopathy is a rare type of cardiomyopathy that can occur during the last month of pregnancy or within the first few months after giving birth.
It is similar to dilated cardiomyopathy in that it affects the left ventricle, causing it to become enlarged and weakened, which impairs the heart's ability to pump blood effectively.
Although peripartum cardiomyopathy is a serious condition, around 70% of women experience significant improvement or recovery within one year after diagnosis, based on their heart's pumping function (ejection fraction) rather than just their symptoms.
